Reading, Writing, and Teaching are my passions. I will forever remember visiting the library with my mom and picking out special books together. I won the spelling bee in 4th grade, earned the Excellence in English award in High School, and went head-to-head with my father in catching grammatical mistakes during dinnertime conversations. As an adult, I'm bereft without a book to read, find joy in writing stories for children, and am passionate about helping other writers make their stories shine. Below are a few of the exceptional books that have influenced my writing journey the most: |
What I write: stories for children, from concept books to young adult novels. Here's a fun fact: all of my stories contain an animal real or imagined, ranging from red-eyed tree frogs to dragons (oh my!). While most of my stories are based in realism, magical elements almost always sneak their way in!
I dipped a toe into adult writing with my short story entitled "A Scripted Life." I submitted it as part of a Winter 2017 writing contest through The Write Source. You are welcome to view it on shortfictionbreak.com.
Joining SCBWI, the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators has helped me immeasurably. I've learned the craft of writing from some of today's most impressive children's authors, agents, and editors, and made wonderful connections with members of my SCBWI-based critique groups. I feel blessed to be a part of such a generous, warm, and talented writing community.
I'm a blogger! I contribute to Writers' Rumpus (writersrumpus.com), the wonderful blog published by my Andover, MA-based SCBWI critique group. My topics include writing tips and inspiration, book reviews, and vexing vocabulary/grammar. On the site, there are also interviews, information about conferences, and helpful information galore by a host of talented contributors.
My own blog lives on this website: A Spoonful of Grammar. My goal is to demystify tricky grammar and vocabulary in clear, concise language, lightly humorous language, and it's suitable for children and adults. Sign up HERE to get weekly grammar and vocabulary tips sent right to your inbox.
I'm a Copy Editor! As an active member of two SCBWI critique groups, I critique roughly 8 chapters and/or complete picture books each month. As a consequence of writing A Spoonful of Grammar posts, I'm intimately familiar with the Chicago Manual of Style and can work with any style guide. My deep knowledge of grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and language helped me to pass the core Reading and Writing tests for my MA English Teacher's license on the first attempt. I enjoy grammar, punctuation, and language so much, I can't help but notice repetition, lack of clarity, and misplaced commas when I read. It will be my honor to polish your manuscript before submission to editors or agents, so your work can be viewed in the very best light.
